Things To Consider When Buying Your First Motorcycle

by Courtney Kennedy

When you are interested in buying a motorcycle, it is essential that you get one that fits you, is comfortable to ride, and offers the extras that you want. If you have never ridden a motorcycle before, starting small and trading up later is often a good idea.

Shopping For a Motorcycle

One of the first things to consider when you start looking at motorcycles is what style you would like to have. People are often not sure what they will be comfortable on, so it is worth taking some time to look at different motorcycles styles before making a purchase.

A Harley-Davidson motorcycle is likely going to attract a specific kind of buyer, and if you like the brand and the style, take a look at the options they offer. Most large motorcycle manufacturers offer bikes that fit the cruiser, sportbike, and utility or all-purpose style, so taking a trip to the dealer and sitting on a few bikes to see what feels good is an excellent place to start.

If you have never ridden before, look at the smaller motorcycles that the dealer offers first. For tall people, a larger motorcycle might be a better fit, but only if you have the strength to support the machine off the kickstand and can handle the power that the motorcycle produces. Talk with the dealer, and they can help fit you to a bike that will make your riding experience safe and enjoyable.

Consider a Used Motorcycle

One option that you may want to consider when buying your first motorcycle is purchasing a used motorcycle. If you are considering a specific style, a used bike can save you money, allowing you to trade up later without losing a lot of value on a new machine.

Used motorcycles of all types are available at dealers, through private sales, or at auctions, so finding one you can afford is not typically difficult. If this is your first motorcycle, dropping a used bike is a lot less aggravating than a new bike. While no one wants to think about it, it is pretty common for new motorcycle riders to take small spills or not get the kickstand all the way down and drop the bike on the ground.

When you are riding a new motorcycle that you paid a lot for, even a little damage can be disappointing or frustrating. With used machines, dents and dings are not as big a deal for most new owners.
